Marilyn Howland Hodges
Class of 1961 | 2018 Hall of Fame
After graduating from Goshen High School in 1961, Marilyn was accepted into the Christ Hospital School of Nursing. Only one of ten applicants to the Christ Hospital School of Nursing was admitted to the college. She excelled in her studies and after graduation was hired to be the school nurse for the Goshen Schools. Marilyn held that position for a period of 25 years.
During her 25 year career as the district’s nurse, Marilyn not only cared for all the ill and injured students on a daily basis, she also attended to the needs of all the athletes throughout the sports seasons. This was an era when schools did not have trainers supplied by local orthopedic physicians and or hospitals. In fact, there was no such thing as Sports Medicine. For the student-athletes attending Goshen schools, Marilyn was the trainer, therapist, and sports medicine expert. The students and student-athletes could not have had a better person caring for them, she put time, love, and energy into every young person attending our district for 25 years.
In the late 50’s and early ’60s, Marilyn was part of the GAA ( Girls Athletic Association ) when the girls played half-court basketball. She was also involved in many intramural activities. She also played volleyball for GHS, was a member of the very first Drill Team, and marched with the band during Friday night football games.
Marilyn has lived in Goshen her entire adult life. She was married to Tim Hodges who passed away in 2009. Together they raised a son ( Dan ) who is also a proud alum and Township Trustee. She is currently very active in church activities while attending to the livestock on the family farm. She will tell you she is blessed to have been a part of such a great community and been able to know so many wonderful people that passed through the Goshen Local Schools.
